The Next-Gen Writing Experience

This app is a complete re-imagining of how writing can be done in 3D-space and is based on the capabilities of your hands rather than the limitations of the keyboard. This is an early access release and there is a learning curve to it. It will later become the Sphere, which you can see here. For more information on why we are offering an early access model, read on. Otherwise skip ahead to"Erghis Orb Writing Style".

ErghisTech was founded by two engineering students - at Lund University, Sweden - who have worked weekends and holidays for more than a year to bring you their vision of touch-free writing. Current trends in touch-free development of simply moving the keyboard, mouse and touch-screen into a 3D-space is very worrying. If you cannot use your touch-screen keyboard for work due to the lack of tactile feedback, why would lifting it into the air and making it invisible help? Even if you add auto-correction and predictive methods to compensate for problems, you are still stuck with not seeing nor feeling where your keyboard is. These older methods were designed for "touchful" use; not for a touch-free environment. There is much potential in 3D-interaction, but it needs to be unlocked by thinking outside the box. It needs to be moved away from keyboards and touch-screens and be metaphorically built into your hands and body. We have the vision for how to achieve this, but we are still a small team with limited time working as hard as we can. The insignificant fee you pay for this app will help make our concepts really shine and help make them serious contenders to physical alternatives.

We would love to hear your opinions and visions on touch free interaction so that we may improve our designs and help you enable your interaction style. The more people that buy our software, the faster we will be able to hire developers and push out updates to make this easier, better and the touch-free writing experience that it should be!

The Erghis Orb Writing Style

Touch-free writing should not be about you trying to find a keyboard in the air or on-screen. Instead it needs to find you. Imagine holding a ball with your two hands. This means cupping them and facing them towards each other. The thumbs are great sliders, which leaves 8 fingers for writing. If you simply hold you two hands opposite each other horizontally, you can write the alphabet by sliding your thumbs to change character sets. By twisting the ball with one or both hands you can reach many other layers of symbols, characters and have space left to make your own shortcuts. The design even works if you put your hands on the table or in your lap since the Orb is always in your hands and not connected to any external reference point.

Thanks to the Leap Motion Controller an early version of this is possible. The difference between our vision and the current implementation is that instead of twisting the orb from the sides, you put your hands on top of it and roll it back or forth around the Controller to reach different layers of symbols and characters. Even though this is not our final vision we have great faith in Leap Motion and believe that their technology will keep getting better. For each update they make to their software, the Orb will become one step closer to working as we have envisioned.

By learning now, you will be ready when touch-free writing truly matures. Until then, you can still use it for touch-free writing sessions when you have greasy hands. However, keep in mind that there is a learning curve to it.

The Erghis Handles Mouse Control Style

Erghis Handles is a method for controlling the computer mouse without needing to let go of your writing Orb. Instead, one of your hands grabs an imaginary handle on the ball. The other hand acts the same as before, but has mouse related clicks and shortcuts instead of letters on it. Handles is a natural extension of your writing Orb but can function independently.

Erghis Orb and Erghis Handles in unison gives you the ability to handle your computer fully touch free.

This is now experimentally available through the settings menu or by right clicking the app icon and ticking ”navigation”.

This is the most feature rich keyboard app that I've tried for the Leap yet. They've done a great job of understanding what the Leap tracks well and implemented a system to work with that tracking. As the tracking improves, I expect this to get better and better over time. I hope more devs take the chance to push the envelope forward!

This program has a learning curve to it, but feels like a great step towards touchless computing. I think the program needs some tweaks, but that's everything made for the Leap right now. My only complaint so far, is that I use Gamewave to control my OS, and I have to turn it off, to type with Erghis, and then turn off Erghis to operate my OS without hearing a bunch of typing sounds. I hope it's not too difficult to work around.

I think that I can type in qwerty. (actually, English isn't my mother tongue, so I don't read overview.) but it was too simple. just arrange from a to z. plus, it only support roman alphabet. it doesn't matter to American or European. but Asian does.

  • Fantastic use of tech

I love how intuitive this is, i'm not as fast at typing as i would be with a keyboard but i do not believe that to be a limitation of the app itself but more my lack of experience. It reminds me of getting used to a mobile keypad to type, eventually it would be possible to get decent typing speeds through this. Also feels very sci-fi, i love it.
